This is the miracle of globalization in terms of education in the era of globalization.
This alters not only how students learn or how lecturers teach, but also how the two interact and develop in a global context. Is this enough? Of course not.
Everything will go balanced with technology, information, and communication as usual.
In this new era, classrooms have no walls. That is, the educational environment of this era will ensure that students from all over the world learn how to share and collaborate. This is also like preparing Indonesia's golden generation for the future.
But just like the availability of this new opportunity, new challenges will surely come as well: equality and the maximization of cultural differences.
Now, let's explore the transformation of education in this era of globalization and its implications for students, educators, and learning.
What is Globalization in Education?
Globalization of education refers to nations' growing interdependence in terms of education delivery and receipt, as well as the delivery and receipt of educational knowledge and materials.
It allows students and teachers to easily share information and communicate using current technologies, such as the website and other facilities. To prepare for the global economy, they incorporate cultures, new teaching methods, and even global thinking into the classroom. It encourages learning about global issues like global warming and social justice.
However, there are some challenges to globalization, such as inequitable resource distribution, and there is a risk that our cultures will be washed away by the tides of global education. However, it also implies that attempting to strike a balance between global trends and domestic requirements is the best way to ensure that everyone benefits equally.
Globalization of Education in Indonesia
Globalization has become a dominating, major, and comprehensive phenomenon for the development of the world today. In the era of globalization, national boundaries are becoming increasingly open, and information exchange and interaction between nations are becoming easier with the alignment of communication and information technology.
As a country whose status is still developing, Indonesia cannot escape the influence of this globalization era, especially in the field of education. Education in Indonesia has undergone a significant transformation due to the influence of globalization. Technological, cultural, and economic changes have affected the education system at large, thus creating new challenges and opportunities for the development of education in Indonesia (Simamora R, 2020).
In the context of education, globalization includes the exchange of knowledge, educational practices, and educational culture between countries that blend into each other towards strong competition. Rapid global changes have brought new challenges to the education system in Indonesia. This raises complex issues that require in-depth understanding to identify appropriate solutions (M Yusuf, 2018).
Although the impact of globalization on education in Indonesia is significant, there is a gap in the literature that comprehensively reveals its impact. Therefore, this essay aims to fill that gap by providing a more comprehensive picture of the impact of globalization on education in Indonesia.
Globalization has a great influence on education in Indonesia, and technology will determine the progress of education in the future. However, some things highlight the negative impact of globalization on education in Indonesia, such as the loss of state control over education and the gap in social structure caused by the integration of globalization with education.
Research published in 2015 by Leonardus Pandu Hapsoro entitled Moral Identity: Reconstruction of Indonesian Identity in the Era of Cultural Globalization. This research shows the process of identity reconstruction through awareness as a moral agent responsible for Indonesian culture in the era of globalization (Leonardus, 2015).
Another study by Arina Hidayati focused on the knowledge and skills needed by students to prepare them to face the world of business and industry.
Due to the challenges and demands posed by globalization, people are changing their perspective on education. People now believe that education can improve their lives. Plus, in this modern era, getting a higher degree is necessary to get a job in the working world, such as in Indonesia, where the social inequality crisis is getting worse in this globalization era.
The transformation of education in Indonesia in the era of globalization in the education sector was recently presented at the Transforming Education Summit at the United Nations in New York, United States, by Nadien Anwar Makarim and received appreciation from the international public.
What are the Goals of Education Transformation in the Global Era?
Global education plays an important role in preparing people for an increasingly globalized society. Its goals are to increase awareness, knowledge, and skills in analyzing and evaluating global affairs, as well as to improve cultural sensitivity and intercultural interaction. The following are the key goals of global education:
Promotes global awareness. Education as a global structure is based, among other things, on an understanding of the various cultures, societies, and challenges found around the world. Students are allowed to think beyond their local or national boundaries and realize that the world exists. They are part of a group that includes concerns about climate change, poverty, and human rights, among others.
Addressing global challenges. The goal of international education is to prepare people to effectively participate in the functioning of global societies. Students who understand global issues can work to develop better solutions to various global challenges.
What is the impact of Educational Transformation in the global Era?
Education is one of the main systems that has been influenced by globalization in various ways, and here we will discuss what the negative impacts of globalization? Doesn't it provide good opportunities for the transformation of education?
Global education and students are faced with various challenges as follows:
Unequal access to education. Globalization has increased access to education in most areas while increasing the gap between developed and developing countries.
Competition in local education systems. Global competition may force educational systems in other countries to match international standards, despite shortcomings in meeting the needs of learners.
Education is becoming more commercial. It has been observed that as a result of globalization, commercialization of education has gained traction, and commercial educational institutions may prioritize business gain over the needs of students and teachers. New concerns have been raised about the commercialization of knowledge.
Looking Ahead
Therefore, the discussion in this essay provides concrete suggestions on how globalization has paved the way for cultural exchange and the implementation of quality improvement or educational transformation, leading to very strong performance competition requirements for students both now and in the future.
Indeed, this promises a lot for a more modern evaluation of personal and academic development. But this also presents some challenges, such as inequality between individual freedoms.
Thus, with the transformation of education, this not only promises good benefits but also warns us not to be complacent in our interactions in the global competition.
